UNBELIEVABLE
A Netflix Limited Series
The Story
When teenager Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever) reports that she was sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home, the detectives investigating her case, as well as the people closest to her, come to doubt the truth of her story. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (Emmy winners Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) meet while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes, and partner to catch a serial rapist.
With episodes directed by Oscar nominees Susannah Grant and Lisa Cholodenko, as well as Emmy winning director Michael Dinner, Unbelievable is a story of unspeakable trauma, unwavering tenacity, and astounding resilience.
Awards
Unbelievable shows both the destruction that ravages sexual assault victims when we respond in ways that are wrong ‒ and the hope, healing, and accountability that can result when we are right. It creates change on the most personal and individual level, which joins to become a powerful force for reform on the institutional and global level.
It is no wonder this gripping series received the PEN America Award for Television Excellence, and will receive an American Film Institute Award in January, and a Media Excellence Award from EVAWI in April.
Unbelievable has also been nominated for four Golden Globes, four Critics’ Choice Awards, a Writers Guild Award, a Gotham Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
The series was inspired by real events, as documented in a Pulitzer Prize-winning article by ProPublica and The Marshall Project, entitled An Unbelievable Story of Rape, written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, and later developed into a book called A False Report: A True Story of Rape in America. The incredible story was also featured in the Peabody award-winning podcast, This American Life, in an episode called Anatomy of Doubt.
